The 2-slice toaster – history at a glance

Toasting was a way of prolonging the life of bread back in ancient times. The Romans were particularly fond of toasting and brought the idea of holding bread over an open fire to Britain. This method was repeated through centuries until the invention of electricity eventually led to the invention of the 2-slice toaster.

American mechanic, Charles Strite, patented the first pop-up toaster in 1919. His invention was developed further and later became the iconic “Toastmaster” – the first household toaster to be able to brown bread on both sides. This heralded the modern age of 2-slice toasters.

The introduction of pre-sliced loaves in 1928 boosted interest in Charles Strite’s design and before long the automatic toaster became standard in many homes around America, while its popularity also started to grow in the UK.

By the late 1970s large slot 2-slice and 4-slice toasters appeared in shops, enabling thicker slices of bread to be toasted. The discovery of heat resistant plastics opened the door for different styles and shapes, and toasters became kitchen fashion accessories as well as practical appliances.
